MP urges diplomatic solution from US for lasting Palestine-Israel peace deal

On 21 July 2025, during a debate in the UK House of Commons, Markus Campbell-Savours, Labour MP for Penrith & Solway, raised a question to Foreign Secretary David Lammy regarding the proposed ceasefire arrangements between Hamas and Israel.

Campbell-Savours highlighted that Hamas is seeking Egypt, Qatar, and the United States to act as legal guarantors not only for a 60-day truce but also up to the signing of any final agreement. He asked whether the United States could be persuaded to extend its role as a guarantor beyond the final settlement, suggesting that such pressure might compel Hamas to reconsider its objectives, especially given the desperate desire for long-term security among the population.

In response, David Lammy emphasized the UK's collaboration with Arab partners and reiterated the government's stance that Hamas must exit governance in Gaza. He agreed with Campbell-Savours that a temporary pause is insufficient, stating: “We need an enduring, permanent ceasefire.”

This exchange underscores the UK's diplomatic efforts to push for a sustainable resolution in Gaza and reflects growing parliamentary concern over the humanitarian crisis and the political dynamics of ceasefire negotiations.
